Estimates, not assessments

Every figure on this site is an estimate of an annual road tax liability, produced from the sources we cite using the calculation method we describe. It is not an official assessment and it is not tax advice. The amount you are actually charged is determined by the authority that bills you.

Why a figure can differ from your bill

• Regional variation. Many countries set rates by state, province, canton or municipality.
• Registration date. First-year rates, phase-outs and exemption windows depend on when a vehicle was first registered.
• Vehicle specifics. Kerb weight, list price including options, motor power as homologated, emissions rating and vehicle class all change the result.
• Policy change. Rates are revised annually and incentives are withdrawn. A figure can be right when published and wrong a month later.
• Individual circumstances. Business use, commercial classification, disability provisions and local reliefs may apply to you.

Confidence labels

To make the variable quality of this kind of data visible, every country carries a confidence label:

• Verified — the figure was checked against the official source named on the page.
• Modelled — derived from published legislation or official parameters; may simplify local variations.
• Indicative — a typical value for orientation only, where rates vary a lot or policy is in transition.

Always verify before you act

Before renewing tax, buying or importing a vehicle, or making a budget decision, confirm the figure with the relevant authority. We link to the authority for each country on its page.
